Beer Head Lookout – David & Elaine’s Blog!

We felt privileged to be one of the first to stay at the Lookout following the amazing and sympathetic renovation of the Napoleonic Lookout. After the friendly and hospitable welcome from Rob and receiving the keys, I recall the excitement as we drove up the track to the top of the headland where the top of the Lookout tower is the first thing you see above the hedgerows.

It was a special feeling opening the door and immediately sensing the luxury of the Lookout. The attention to detail throughout the accommodation is incredible and worthy of any 5-star rating; more if it was allowed!

The 270° view from the lounge on the top (second) floor is stunning, both East to Seaton and West to Sidmouth. It was difficult moving from the views, even to get a drink from the conveniently located wine/ beer fridge next to the sofas. Getting to the top floor by the cylindrical vacuum lift was a real novelty (beam me up Scotty!), although access was also possible by the external staircase from the kitchen on the first floor for those who don’t like small spaces.

Preparing meals in the plush kitchen was a real pleasure, with the sink looking out over the nearby cliff to the sea beyond. There was even a ‘bean to coffee’ machine loaded up with great coffee beans. The weather was good so we had quite a few meals, coffees and ‘sundowners’ out on the balcony which was adjacent to the kitchen and above the bedrooms on the first floor. The Lookout always receives a lot of attention from walkers on the very popular footpath between Beer and Branscombe and it was fun waving at them from our most enviable position and having a chat if we were outside on the balcony.

When the sun goes down and night falls, the silence of the Lookout is very restful, particularly if you have taken advantage of the excellent sauna in the adjacent wooden building. There is hardly any light pollution, so on a clear night the stars are even brighter.

The beds are as comfortable as you would expect from such luxurious accommodation and no issues with noisy neighbours, so a good sleep is almost guaranteed.

For a special occasion The Lookout is a great option and I can’t wait for the next excuse to book a few days of luxury.
